Terasjabar.co – West Java has launched its ambitious plan to develop a new economic zone in the north-eastern part of the province, the Rebana Metropolitan, during the 2020 West Java Investment Summit (WJIS) held on Monday by the provincial administration in cooperation with the local office of Bank Indonesia (BI).
“I hereby announce to the world the start of the Rebana Metropolitan, the third metropolitan [in West Java] after the Bodebek [Bogor, Depok, Bekasi] and the Bandung Raya. We will design Rebana to be the most futuristic, well-planned, and sustainable metropolitan in Indonesia,” West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil said in his remark.
Stretching at 43,913 hectares of land, the Rebana Metropolitan will consist of seven locations namely the Cirebon Regency, Subang Regency, Majalengka Regency, Indramayu Regency, Kuningan Regency, Sumedang Regency and Cirebon City.
This major hub includes a large international airport, the Kertajati Airport, in Majalengka and Patimban Seaport in Subang, which has finished its first phase of construction and will be inaugurated in December.
During the launch event at the province’s capital of Bandung, Ridwan signed the MoU (Management of Understanding) deal with the seven regional heads, witnessed by BI’s West Java chief representative Herawanto and West Java Investment Agency (DPMPTSP) head Noneng Komara.
Ridwan said that the project was expected to provide five million jobs by the end of 2030 and fasten economic growth at ten percent per year. “With Rebana as the machine, [economic growth] will move faster. That’s why we must support it,” he said.
He further emphasized that the involvement of local residents in the urban agglomeration was of top priority. “I don’t want the residents to only become spectators in their own home. Therefore, I’m asking the regents and mayor of Rebana Metropolitan to prepare the human resources in their respective regions,” he said.
West Java is indeed a home to 49.3 million people, 38.9 million of which are youth workforce with a human development index categorized as high (72.03) in 2019 according to Statistics Indonesia.
Moreover, the 2020 WJIS also marked the groundbreaking of first city Subang Smartpolitan, one of the 13 cities to be built in Rebana. In another interview conducted earlier this month, the governor said that Rebana would be built as an “agglomeration of cities, not just factories as in Bekasi and Karawang”.
In addition to the launch of Rebana and Subang Smartpolitan, the summit, attended by hundreds of foreign and domestic investors, also has a series of one-on-one meeting, market sounding and talk shows, as well as site visits. (Alya Nurbaiti/Kontributor)
